Reference Verification
Reference verification is a structured conversation with a candidate's former manager, supervisor or peer, aimed at understanding their work performance and conduct beyond what employment records alone can show.

What is reference verification?
Unlike employment verification, which confirms factual employment records, reference verification involves a direct conversation — by phone or structured questionnaire — with someone who worked with the candidate, covering role responsibilities, performance and reason for leaving from that person's perspective.
Why organizations use it
Paper records confirm that someone held a job; they don't say much about how they did it. For leadership, client-facing or team-dependent roles, a reference conversation often surfaces context that a factual employment check can't.
Verification process
Candidate provides referee details
Name, designation and contact information for the reference are collected.
Referee contacted and scheduled
The referee is reached and a convenient time is arranged.
Structured reference call conducted
A specialist conducts the conversation using a consistent set of role-relevant questions.
Summary compiled
Findings are summarized into the case report.
Information & documents required
Referee's name, designation, organization and contact details, along with their working relationship to the candidate.
Common use cases
Leadership and senior hires, client-facing roles, and positions where team fit and collaboration style matter as much as technical qualification.
Important considerations
Some former employers restrict staff from giving verbal references as a matter of policy, and referees are sometimes reluctant to share candid feedback — both are noted in the report rather than treated as a missing check.
Technology-assisted workflow
Scheduling and reminders are automated through the case system, but the reference conversation itself is always conducted by a trained specialist, since tone, follow-up questions and reading between the lines matter here more than in a records check.
Reference Verification FAQs
How many references are typically checked?
This depends on the employer's policy and the seniority of the role; one to two references is common for most positions.
What happens if a referee is unavailable or unresponsive?
We attempt multiple contact channels and note in the report if a referee couldn't be reached within the agreed timeline.
Can a reference check replace employment verification?
No — they serve different purposes. Employment verification confirms factual records; reference verification adds qualitative context on top of that.
